If you plan to import goods into India or export them abroad, the very first thing you'll need is an Import Export Code (IEC). Issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), it's a 10-digit code that acts as your business's passport for international trade.

In this guide we'll walk through who needs an IEC, the documents required, the step-by-step process and the common mistakes that cause delays.

Who needs an IEC?

Any individual or business entity engaged in importing or exporting goods or services from India needs an IEC. There are a few exemptions — for instance, imports and exports for personal use not connected with trade — but for any commercial activity, it is mandatory.

An IEC is issued once and is valid for the lifetime of the entity. However, it must be updated electronically every year to remain active, even if there are no changes.

Documents you'll need

Keeping your paperwork ready makes the process smooth. Typically you'll require:

  • PAN card of the business or individual
  • Proof of business address (utility bill, rent agreement or sale deed)
  • A cancelled cheque or bank certificate of the current account
  • Aadhaar / identity proof of the proprietor, partners or directors

The step-by-step process

  1. Register on the DGFT portal and verify your details.
  2. Complete the IEC application form (ANF 2A) with business and bank details.
  3. Upload the supporting documents in the required format.
  4. Pay the application fee and digitally sign the application.
  5. Receive your IEC certificate electronically once approved.

Common mistakes to avoid

Most rejections and delays come from avoidable errors — mismatched details between PAN and the application, an incorrect bank account, or blurry document uploads. The annual update requirement is also frequently missed, which can deactivate an otherwise valid IEC.

If you'd rather skip the hassle entirely, our DGFT team handles the complete registration for you — accurately, the first time. Get in touch and we'll take it from here.
